Nobody likes living with joint pain, especially when it involves an area as active and crucial to everyday life as the jaw. Severe and constant jaw pain is usually caused by temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or temporomandibular disorder (TMD). TMJ and TMD are disorders of the jaw muscles and nerves caused by injury or inflammation to the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone and the skull. When this joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to a localized pain.
At the office of Elias Prosthodontics, our prosthodontists are experts in TMJ and TMD. They understand the complex relationship of dental occlusion and jaw development on joint health. In fact, our whole staff is dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care in the field of dentofacial orthopedics.
Causes of TMJ disorders include injury or misalignment to the teeth or jaw, teeth grinding or clenching, poor posture, stress, arthritis and gum chewing. Those afflicted with TMJ or TMD usually wind up consulting with a prosthodontist, who is highly trained in treating dental and facial problems.
When evaluating patients for the presence of a TMJ disorder, our prosthodontists will review the medical and dental histories and then perform a thorough clinical assessment of joint symptoms and function.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment of a TMJ disorder may include oral appliances, such as night guards or stabilization splints, to alleviate strain on the joints. Botox injections, physical therapy, occlusal adjustments, more comprehensive orthodontic care or even a surgical procedure are also possibilities.
At the office of Elias Prosthodontics, our mission is to cure or alleviate your pain caused by a TMJ disorder. Every patient is unique, and all individuals’ treatment preferences vary. Our goal is to offer a clear picture of all the options available to you and deliver the results you expect. For more information about services, please call us today.
