Adjusting to new dental work is often a process, especially when it comes to dentures. People who’ve just gotten a full set on their upper jaw, lower jaw or both jaws frequently say their dentures don’t fit properly. The patients state that the dentures are too big or that they make their lips protrude. Those comments aren’t unusual, and, with time, the perceived symptoms will significantly decrease or disappear.
The office of Elias Prosthodontics has a well-established reputation for providing high-quality care and compassionate service. We are an excellent solution for your oral healthcare needs. Whatever your prosthodontic needs, we provide the expert service that you need and expect.
During the adjustment period, you may inadvertently bite your cheek or tongue. If you have an upper-jaw denture, your tongue may need time to get accustomed to pressure against the denture instead of your palate. Your mouth will sense the “foreign object” and produce more saliva. This will also fade away. Within several hours of inserting your dentures, your gums may feel discomfort. Always consult with your prosthodontist regarding the most appropriate pain-relief medications you should take. Never attempt to adjust your dentures yourself.
As for eating, chewing will feel different, which is expected and natural. However, food may seem to have dulled flavors. That’s because during your adjustment period, your mouth is sending strong signals to your brain. Those signals subdue the flow of communication from your taste buds. But once you’ve adapted to the dentures, your brain will recognize what your taste buds are telling it.
During your adjustment period, concentrate on soft foods, such as pudding, cooked veggies, fish and eggs. When you’re ready for meat, cut it into smaller pieces. Evenly disperse the pressure on your gums by chewing half of the food on your mouth’s back-left side and the other half on the back-right side.
Denture wearers should see their prosthodontist every six months so he or she can monitor any changes in the soft and hard tissues of your oral cavity.
